Lemosho via Western Breach – 8 Days

Kilimanjaro Trekking Routes
GROUP DEPARTURE/PRIVATE DEPATURES ARE AVAILABLE

Why this itinerary?

“The more adventurous version of the 8 day Lemosho route for those that specifically want to ascend the Western Breach – note that this area has an increased level of risk and requires guests to sign a separate waiver. Nevertheless, it is a superb route for the right type of guest.”

Description

“Starting on the Western side of Kilimanjaro at the Lemosho trail head, this route is one of the least used. The route to the summit via the Western Breach is the most spectacular ascent route and allows easy access to the crater floor, ash pit and a relatively easy summit day. ”

Highlights

“Kilimanjaro! Afro-montane forest, Shira plateau, glacial valleys and alpine desert, the Western Breach, glaciers, ascent of Kibo and views of Kibo caldera and ash pit.”

Day 1: KILIMANJARO – FOREST

FromArusha we set out in vehicles to the starting point of the Lemosho trail. Here you meet the rest of your crew and set of at a leisurely pace into afro-montane forest. Lunch is taken on trail and camp is reached mid afternoon. Overnight Forest Camp (full board)

Day 2: KILIMANJARO – SHIRA 1

From the forested slopes of Lemosho you ascend through Podocarpus and Juniper forest and break out of the forest on to the heath zone and the Shira Plateau. Lunch is taken on trail and you arrive in camp mid afternoon. Overnight Shira 1 Camp (full board).

Day 3: KILIMANJARO- SHIRA 2

“After a relatively long hike and significant altitude gain, today is a short day and you arrive in Shira 2 camp in time for lunch. A good day for acclimatisation with the option of an afternoon walk with your guides. Overnight Shira 2 Camp (full board).”

Day 4: KILIMANJARO – LAVA TOWER

The route to Lava Tower takes you out of the heath zone in to the alpine desert zone. Here relatively little flora or fauna can survive the extreme temperature ranges and conditions that typify this zone. A half day where lunch is taken in camp. In the afternoon there is time to go for an acclimatization walk before dinner. Overnight Lava Tower (full board).

Day 5: KILIMANJARO – ARROW GLACIER

The ascent to Arrow Glacier is relatively short and leaves plenty of time to rest for a large part of the day. Short walks are possible with the guides to enjoy views of the Great Barranco and remnants of the once mighty glaciers that filled the breach. Dinner and overnight Arrow Glacier Camp (full board).

Day 6: KILIMANJARO – CRATER

The starting time this morning will be dependent on the previous day’s guides assessment of the weather and snowfall conditions. Ascent to the crater floor takes around 4 to 6 hours and a picnic refuel stop is taken near the top of the breach wall. Once on the crater floor there is time to rest and for those that are feeling strong a hike to the ash pit is a superb option. Dinner and overnight Crater Camp (full board).

Day 7: KILIMANJARO – MWEKA

“Unlike other routes with a night time ascent, your hike selection affords you a day time ascent to the summit. Leaving an hour before dawn you ascend to the Roof of Africa! From here you descend to Mweka Camp for the evening. Dinner and overnight Mweka Camp (full board).”

Day 8: KILIMANJARO – END

A final descent of 4,500 ft brings you down to Mweka Gate where your team will have prepared another scrumptious and fresh lunch and your transfer vehicles will be waiting to collect you. Here you will say goodbye to our mountain staff before heading to the hotel near Arusha for a farewell dinner and either overnight or a day room and departure.
