The Shira Route VIP Kilimanjaro climbing experience offered by Kiliclimb Africa Safaris is one of the most exclusive and scenic ways to conquer Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. This premium trekking adventure is designed for travelers seeking a less crowded, highly scenic, and well-acclimatized route to Uhuru Peak. Approaching the mountain from the western side, the Shira Route joins the legendary Lemosho and Machame pathways, offering climbers dramatic landscapes, high-altitude plateaus, and some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Tanzania. Unlike other routes, climbers quickly ascend above the rainforest zone to the expansive Shira Plateau at around 3,500 meters, making this journey visually spectacular from the very first day.
The Shira Route is widely recognized among Kilimanjaro trekking experts as a moderately less steep ascent during the initial stages, which makes it appealing for adventure travelers who prefer a more gradual hiking experience with fewer crowds. However, due to the early high-altitude exposure, proper acclimatization is essential to maximize summit success. That is why Kiliclimb Africa Safaris includes a carefully designed pre-hiking acclimatization program in Arusha National Park, ensuring climbers are physically and mentally prepared before beginning the ascent.
Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Luxury Welcome at Gran Meliá Arusha

Day 2: Arusha National Park Acclimatization Safari Experience
Day two is dedicated to an immersive acclimatization safari experience in the stunning Arusha National Park, one of Tanzania’s most beautiful yet underrated wildlife destinations. This carefully planned pre-climb activity helps your body adjust to altitude while offering a soft introduction to Tanzania’s rich natural beauty. The park features diverse ecosystems including lush forests, open savannahs, volcanic landscapes, and shimmering Momella Lakes, all set against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Meru.
During your guided exploration, you will encounter a variety of wildlife such as giraffes, bushbucks, waterbucks, colobus monkeys, and numerous bird species that make Arusha National Park a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. A scenic picnic lunch is served in a picturesque location inside the park, allowing you to relax and absorb the peaceful surroundings. After the safari experience, you will return to your hotel for a detailed Kilimanjaro briefing, equipment preparation, and final climb readiness with Kiliclimb Africa Safaris.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp – First Step into Kilimanjaro’s High Altitude Wilderness
After breakfast, your journey begins with a drive toward Londorossi Gate for registration before continuing to the Morum Barrier, the official starting point of your hike. From here, the adventure truly begins as you enter the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and ancient volcanic landscapes. The terrain on this day is relatively gentle and open, offering panoramic views of the mountain’s western slopes.
The hike takes approximately two to three hours, allowing you to slowly adjust to altitude while enjoying the vast beauty of the Shira Caldera. By the time you arrive at Shira 1 Camp, located at around 3,610 meters, you will already feel immersed in the high-altitude wilderness of Kilimanjaro. Dinner and overnight stay at camp are provided, ensuring rest and recovery for the next stage of your ascent.
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Day 4: Moir Camp – Acclimatization Hike on the Shira Plateau
On this day, you will continue deeper into the mountain ecosystem, trekking across the Shira Plateau toward Moir Camp. The hike lasts approximately five to six hours and offers continuous scenic views of volcanic formations and wide alpine valleys. Upon arrival, lunch is served followed by rest and recovery time.
In the afternoon, your guide will lead a special acclimatization hike designed using the “climb high, sleep low” principle. This technique is essential for improving oxygen adaptation and increasing summit success rates. The night is spent at Moir Camp, located at nearly 3,995 meters, surrounded by the peaceful silence of the high-altitude environment.
Overnight: Moir Camp
Day 5: Barranco Camp via Lava Tower – High Altitude Adaptation Day
This is one of the most important acclimatization days on the Shira Route. After an early morning wake-up, you will trek toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 meters, where your body will experience higher altitude exposure before descending again to Barranco Camp. This strategic ascent and descent greatly improves oxygen adaptation and prepares your body for summit conditions.
Lunch is taken at Lava Tower, where you will spend time resting and allowing your body to adjust before continuing downhill. The descent to Barranco Camp takes you through striking landscapes and dramatic valleys, arriving at an elevation of around 3,900 meters. Dinner and overnight stay are at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro.
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Day 6: Karanga Camp – The Famous Barranco Wall Ascent
Your morning begins with energy as you prepare to tackle the iconic Great Barranco Wall, a thrilling but non-technical climb that rewards hikers with incredible views over the surrounding valleys. This section is one of the most memorable moments of the Kilimanjaro Shira Route experience.
After conquering the wall, you continue through rolling terrain toward Karanga Valley. This shorter trekking day is intentionally designed for acclimatization, giving your body time to adjust to altitude. Karanga Camp provides a peaceful resting environment where all meals are served, and you prepare for the higher elevations ahead.
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Day 7: Barafu Camp – Final Preparation for the Summit Push
Today’s hike leads you to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit attempt. The trek takes around three to four hours, gradually moving into harsher alpine conditions. Upon arrival, you will rest, eat, and receive a detailed briefing from your guide about the upcoming midnight summit attempt.
The afternoon is reserved for rest and mental preparation, as the summit climb requires physical endurance and determination. Early dinner is served before you sleep briefly in preparation for the challenging but rewarding ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 8: Uhuru Peak Summit – Descent to Mweka Camp
Your summit journey begins shortly after midnight, climbing through darkness under a sky filled with stars. After approximately six to seven hours of hiking, you will reach Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. This unforgettable moment offers breathtaking views and a powerful sense of achievement.
After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Barafu Camp for rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. This is one of the longest trekking days, lasting up to 12–13 hours in total, but it is also the most rewarding. Overnight stay is at Mweka Camp, where you finally rest at lower altitude.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Day 9: Return to Arusha – Celebration and Departure
After breakfast, you begin your final descent to Mweka Gate, where you officially complete your Kilimanjaro climbing adventure. At the gate, your Kiliclimb Africa Safaris driver will be waiting to transfer you back to the Gran Meliá Hotel in Arusha.
This is a day of celebration, reflection, and relaxation as you return to comfort after conquering Mount Kilimanjaro. A hot shower, a warm meal, and a peaceful hotel stay mark the perfect ending to your extraordinary Tanzanian adventure.
