Climbing Kilimanjaro via the Shira Route – Western Side Expedition
The Shira Route on Mount Kilimanjaro offers one of the most scenic, remote, and less crowded trekking experiences in Tanzania, making it a top choice for adventure seekers booking with Kiliclimb Africa Safari.
Approaching Kilimanjaro from the western side, this route begins on the Lemosho trail before merging with the Machame path, giving climbers a rich blend of wilderness, dramatic landscapes, and high-altitude adventure. Unlike many other routes that begin in dense rainforest, the Shira Route starts higher on the mountain, quickly ascending to approximately 3,500 meters (11,500 feet), where trekkers are immediately rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s glacier-capped summit and vast volcanic terrain.
This route is widely recognized for its relatively gentle early gradients, especially during the first days of trekking, which makes it ideal for hikers who prefer a more gradual and less physically demanding introduction to high-altitude climbing. Its quieter trails also provide a more private and immersive safari-style trekking experience, far away from the busier routes. However, due to the rapid altitude gain, proper acclimatization is extremely important.
Kiliclimb Africa Safari strongly recommends additional preparation time, including a dedicated acclimatization experience in Arusha National Park before beginning the ascent, to significantly improve summit success and ensure a safer, more enjoyable Kilimanjaro climbing experience.
Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Kilimanjaro International Airport to Gran Meliá Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, guests are warmly welcomed by a professional representative from Kiliclimb Africa Safari, who ensures a smooth airport pickup and transfer to the luxurious Gran Meliá Hotel in Arusha. This elegant hotel serves as the perfect base for rest, relaxation, and final preparation before beginning the Kilimanjaro climbing adventure. Located in one of the most scenic parts of Arusha, the hotel is surrounded by lush landscapes and offers stunning views of Mount Meru, creating an immediate sense of African wilderness beauty.
Guests can unwind in world-class facilities including a swimming pool, spa, fitness center, and beautifully landscaped gardens. The peaceful atmosphere allows travelers to recover from international flights while mentally preparing for the upcoming Shira Route expedition. Evening time is ideal for enjoying sunset views from the terrace, settling into safari mode, and meeting the Kiliclimb Africa Safari mountain team for an introduction to the adventure ahead.
Overnight: Gran Melia Arusha
Day 2:Arusha National Park Acclimatization Experience
The second day of the itinerary is dedicated to acclimatization and exploration inside Arusha National Park, one of Tanzania’s most diverse and visually stunning protected areas. This experience plays a crucial role in preparing the body for Kilimanjaro’s altitude while offering a true taste of East African safari landscapes. The park features the famous Momella Lakes, Ngurdoto Crater, and the impressive backdrop of Mount Meru, creating a dramatic and unforgettable natural setting.
During the guided hike and game viewing experience, travelers may encounter wildlife such as giraffes, bushbucks, colobus monkeys, waterbucks, and various species of antelope, alongside over 400 recorded bird species. The experience is both educational and immersive, as professional guides from Kiliclimb Africa Safari explain the region’s geology, ecology, and biodiversity. A scenic picnic lunch is enjoyed in the wild before returning to the hotel for a detailed Kilimanjaro briefing, gear preparation, and final packing before the trek begins.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp – Beginning the Kilimanjaro Ascent
After breakfast, the journey officially begins with a drive to Londorossi Gate for registration before continuing to the Morum Barrier, the starting point of the Shira Route trek. From here, hikers enter the Shira Caldera, one of Kilimanjaro’s most unique volcanic landscapes. The terrain is open, vast, and relatively flat compared to other routes, offering immediate high-altitude views and a dramatic introduction to the mountain environment.
The trek to Shira 1 Camp takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, allowing plenty of time to absorb the breathtaking scenery and adapt gently to the altitude. The camp sits at around 3,610 meters (11,600 feet), offering a stunning overnight location surrounded by wide open plains and distant glacier views.
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Day 4: Moir Camp – Acclimatization and High-Altitude Hiking
This day involves a scenic hike toward Moir Camp, taking approximately 5 to 6 hours through increasingly dramatic alpine terrain. Upon arrival, climbers enjoy lunch and rest before an important acclimatization hike in the afternoon. This “go high, sleep low” technique is essential for improving oxygen efficiency and reducing altitude sickness risks, making it a key part of the Kilimanjaro success strategy.
Moir Camp, located at about 3,995 meters (13,200 feet), offers a peaceful and remote environment ideal for recovery, reflection, and preparation for the next stage of the ascent.
Overnight: Moir Camp
Day 5: Barranco Camp via Lava Tower – High Altitude Adaptation
The day begins early with a hot drink before trekking toward Lava Tower, reaching elevations of approximately 4,600 meters (15,000 feet). This section is critical for acclimatization as the body is exposed to higher altitude conditions before descending to Barranco Camp for overnight rest. Lunch is taken at Lava Tower, allowing climbers to adjust physically while enjoying dramatic volcanic landscapes.
The descent to Barranco Camp, located at around 3,900 meters (13,000 feet), provides one of the most beautiful transitions on Kilimanjaro, with sweeping valley views and unique vegetation zones.
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Day 6: Karanga Camp – Climbing the Great Barranco Wall
The journey continues with an early start and a thrilling ascent of the famous Great Barranco Wall, a natural lava formation that offers both adventure and spectacular scenery. Although challenging in appearance, the climb is safe and highly rewarding, providing panoramic views of glaciers, valleys, and surrounding peaks.
This section of the trek is intentionally paced for acclimatization, as longer exposure at altitude significantly increases summit success rates. The day ends at Karanga Camp, located at approximately 3,930 meters (13,000 feet), where climbers enjoy full meals and rest in preparation for the final ascent stages.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 7: Barafu Camp – Final Summit Preparation
Today’s hike leads to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit push, situated at about 4,600 meters (15,000 feet). The terrain becomes more rugged and alpine as climbers approach the highest point of preparation. Upon arrival, guides from Kiliclimb Africa Safari conduct a detailed briefing for the midnight summit attempt, ensuring safety, pacing, and mental readiness.
After early dinner and rest, climbers prepare for the most important part of the journey—reaching Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 8: Uhuru Peak Summit – Descent to Mweka Camp
The summit attempt begins around midnight, climbing through freezing temperatures and challenging terrain toward Uhuru Peak. After 6 to 7 hours of ascent, climbers reach the highest point in Africa and witness unforgettable sunrise views over glaciers and volcanic landscapes.
After summit celebrations and photography, the descent begins back to Barafu Camp for rest and then continues to Mweka Camp. This is one of the longest trekking days, often lasting 12 to 13 hours, but it is also one of the most rewarding. Mweka Camp sits at approximately 3,100 meters (10,000 feet), offering a well-earned rest after the summit achievement.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Day 9: Return to Arusha – Gran Meliá Hotel Relaxation
The final day begins with a descent to Mweka Gate, taking approximately 4 hours through lush rainforest scenery.
Upon arrival, climbers meet their transfer team from Kiliclimb Africa Safari for a return journey to the Gran Meliá Hotel in Arusha. A warm shower, celebratory atmosphere, and restful evening mark the perfect conclusion to an unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
