Your professional guide will provide insightful information about the ecosystem, geology, and wildlife conservation of the region. After a scenic picnic lunch in the wilderness, you will return to Arusha for a full Kilimanjaro trek briefing, gear check, and final preparations for your mountain climb.

Overnight: Gran Melia

Day 3: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

After breakfast, your Kilimanjaro trekking adventure officially begins as you depart for Machame Gate, the starting point of one of the best trekking routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. The day’s hike takes you through the enchanting montane rainforest zone, a lush environment rich with giant camphor trees, tropical flowers, moss-covered trunks, waterfalls, and vibrant birdlife.

This section of the mountain is famous for its dense forest canopy and frequent sightings of blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys, creating a magical safari-like trekking experience. As you ascend through the forest trail, the air becomes cooler and fresher, and the anticipation of the summit journey builds with every step. After approximately 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you arrive at Machame Camp, where you will enjoy a freshly prepared hot meal and spend the night under the stars at approximately 3,000 meters (9,880 feet).

Overnight: Machame camp

Day 4: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Today’s trek offers one of the most dramatic landscape transitions on the entire Kilimanjaro climb. Leaving the rainforest behind, the route opens into the beautiful heath and moorland zone, famous for its giant heather, volcanic rock formations, and panoramic mountain views.

This is where climbers begin to truly appreciate the unique ecological diversity of Mount Kilimanjaro, often described as experiencing four seasons in four days. As you continue upward, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic with giant lobelias, groundsels, and lava ridges leading toward the expansive Shira Plateau.

The plateau is one of the most breathtaking sections of the mountain, offering wide-open views and unforgettable photo opportunities. After 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you reach Shira Camp at 3,800 meters (12,500 feet), where you will enjoy dinner and overnight rest in preparation for higher altitudes.

Overnight: Shira Camp

Day 5: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

This is one of the most important acclimatization days of the climb and a major reason why the Machame Route offers such strong summit success rates. The trek gradually leads you through moorland into the dramatic alpine desert zone, where vegetation becomes sparse and volcanic landscapes dominate the scenery. You will ascend to the iconic Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,600 meters (15,000 feet), where you stop for lunch and crucial altitude acclimatization.

This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is highly effective for adapting to the mountain’s altitude. After spending time here, you descend to the beautiful Barranco Camp, famous for its breathtaking valley views, towering cliffs, and giant senecio plants. This section is among the most photographed parts of Kilimanjaro and is a highlight for nature lovers and trekking enthusiasts.

Overnight: Barranco Camp

Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Today begins with the exhilarating climb up the world-famous Great Barranco Wall, one of the most iconic features of the Kilimanjaro trek. Despite its intimidating appearance, this section is a thrilling and rewarding scramble rather than a technical climb.

As you ascend, you are rewarded with extraordinary panoramic views of glaciers, valleys, and distant landscapes stretching across Tanzania. At Kiliclimb Africa Safaris, we prioritize proper acclimatization and climber well-being, which is why this day is carefully paced before reaching Karanga Camp. Spending additional time at altitude significantly improves your summit chances while allowing you to enjoy the raw beauty of Kilimanjaro’s rugged wilderness. Dinner and overnight stay take place at Karanga Camp (3,930 meters / 13,000 feet).

Overnight: Karanga Camp

Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Today’s trek takes you into the high alpine zone toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your midnight summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, rocky, and barren, showcasing the true volcanic nature of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Upon arrival at 4,600 meters (15,000 feet), you will have lunch, rest, and receive a detailed summit briefing from your experienced mountain guides. Your guides from Kiliclimb Africa Safaris will carefully assist you in organizing summit clothing, headlamps, gloves, hydration, and safety checks to ensure the best possible chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.

Overnight: Barafu Camp

Day 8: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

This is the most rewarding and unforgettable day of your Kilimanjaro adventure. Around midnight, you begin the final ascent under a sky filled with stars, trekking slowly and steadily toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters / 19,341 feet), the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit at sunrise is a truly life-changing experience, with golden light illuminating glaciers, clouds, and endless African landscapes below.

After capturing unforgettable summit photos and celebrating your achievement, you begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for rest and lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp for overnight stay. This is the longest yet most triumphant day of the journey.

Overnight: Mweka Camp

Day 9: Mweka Gate – Return to Gran Melia Arusha

Wake up with the incredible satisfaction of having conquered Mount Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, descend through the forest to Mweka Gate, where your summit certificates await. Your private driver from Kiliclimb Africa Safaris will then transfer you back to Gran Melia Arusha, where a hot shower, relaxation, and celebration await after your once-in-a-lifetime Tanzania mountain adventure.
