Mount Meru Trekking
Mount Meru, standing tall at 4,566 meters, is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and an ideal prelude for those planning to summit Kilimanjaro. Located within Arusha National Park, Meru offers some of the most spectacular landscapes and wildlife diversity of any Tanzanian mountain. Its slopes feature lush rainforests, open moorlands, volcanic ridges, and crater scenery, providing trekkers with breathtaking panoramas of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding plains. The trail is moderately challenging, with steep ascents and rocky ridges, making it excellent for high-altitude trekking experience and acclimatization. Along the way, hikers may encounter wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, bushbucks, warthogs, Colobus monkeys, and even mountain reedbucks near the summit.
The trek is perfect for those seeking a combination of adventure, wildlife, and mountain scenery in a compact 4-day itinerary. Expert guides, well-equipped camps, and structured support ensure a safe and rewarding climb, with opportunities for acclimatization treks and summit attempts at a pace tailored for success.
Day 0: Pre-Trek Briefing – Arrival in Arusha
For travelers opting for airport transfers, we provide pickup from Kilimanjaro or Arusha airports and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. A pre-trek briefing is held at the hotel, where guides review your equipment, arrange rentals if necessary, and provide advice for the upcoming trek. Arriving at least one day before the climb ensures sufficient preparation and rest.
Day 1: Hotel → Momella Gate → Miriakamba Hut
We depart Arusha for Momella Gate (approx. 1.5 hours), complete entry procedures, and begin trekking through the forests and grasslands of Arusha National Park. Stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Momella Lakes accompany the hike. Wildlife sightings often include giraffes, Cape buffaloes, warthogs, and bushbucks. The day ends at Miriakamba Hut, where you enjoy a hot meal and overnight rest.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut → Saddle Hut
Today’s trek follows the ridge along the Saddle, showcasing the impressive Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and Little Meru. Trekkers may spot Colobus monkeys and Cape buffaloes along the way. After reaching Saddle Hut, a short acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,810m) prepares your body for the summit climb, helping improve oxygen adaptation at higher altitudes.
Day 3: Saddle Hut → Summit → Miriakamba Hut → Momella Gate
The final ascent begins just after midnight following a light meal. Climbers tackle steep, rocky terrain en route to Socialist Peak (4,562m), Mount Meru’s summit. From the top, the views of Meru Crater, the Ash Cone, and the surrounding plains are truly breathtaking. Wildlife such as mountain reedbucks and klipspringers may be visible along the rocky ridges. The descent continues directly to Miriakamba Hut and then to Momella Gate, where your trek concludes with transportation back to Arusha.
