Connectivity & Power in Tanzania: What to Know Before You Go

When traveling through the breathtaking landscapes of Tanzania—whether you’re climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, exploring the Serengeti, or relaxing on Zanzibar’s pristine beaches—staying connected and keeping your devices powered can be a challenge. At Kiliclimb Africa Safaris, we want to ensure you’re fully prepared, so here’s what you need to know about connectivity and power during your safari adventure.

Internet and Wi-Fi Access

Wi-Fi is available at most hotels and lodges, especially in major towns and luxury accommodations. However, once you venture deep into national parks or remote areas, Wi-Fi becomes limited or unavailable. Some mobile lodges may offer internet via satellite, but the speed is often slow and unreliable.

Tip: If staying connected is essential, purchase a local SIM card (such as Vodacom or Airtel) with a data bundle upon arrival. Mobile network coverage is surprisingly good in many parts of the country, even in rural areas.

Electricity and Power Outlets

Tanzania uses Type D and G plugs, and the standard voltage is 230V with a frequency of 50Hz. Power outages can occur, especially in rural areas or during rainy seasons, so always plan ahead.

Must-bring items:

  • Universal power adapter (compatible with UK-style plugs)

  • Power bank (essential during long drives or remote stays)

  • Extra camera batteries if you’re a photography enthusiast

Some camps and lodges offer limited power hours using solar or generator energy, which may only be available in the evening. Charging options may also be restricted to central charging stations rather than in-room sockets.

Tips for Staying Powered Up

  • Charge all devices whenever electricity is available.

  • Use airplane mode to conserve battery when signal is weak.

  • Keep your power bank fully charged and carry a small solar charger for extra convenience.
