Why this itinerary?
“For those that can’t bear sleeping in a tent or during the wettest months, the Marangu route remains a good choice. It is, however, very busy and does not see as much of the mountain as western routes.”
Highlights
“Kilimanjaro: afro-montane forest, Mawenzi, glacial valleys and alpine desert, ascent of Kibo and possible views of Kibo caldera and ash pit. Glaciers and the roof of Africa! ”

Lake Manyara National Park is one of the smaller national parks in Tanzania but still offers beautiful scenery and is home to an attractive array of wildlife. The lake itself is an alkaline lake and reaches a maximum depth of 3.7 m. For bird lovers this park is a real highlight as over 400 species of birds live here. Other residents of the park include elephant, buffalo, hippo, baboon, waterbuck, impala, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. The park has large numbers of leopards, but sightings are rare due to the dense vegetation. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the well-known “tree lions” who climb trees to lazily spend the day there. In the afternoon you will be driven directly to your accommodation in Karatu. Overnight at Eileen’s Inn or similar category, (B|L|D).

The volcanic crater provides a stunning backdrop to some of Africa’s most fertile and richest pastureland. The caldera floor area is mostly open grassland and is the best place in East Africa to see the ‘Big Five’. It is home to a variety of animals including elephant, black rhino, leopard, buffalo, zebra, warthog, wildebeest, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle and the world’s densest population of lion an idyllic picnic spot.
