Health and Vaccination

Vaccinations and Preventive Measures

Before embarking on your journey with Kiliclimb Africa Safaris, it’s crucial to ensure you are adequately protected against various health risks. Here’s a comprehensive guide to the recommended vaccinations, immunizations, and medications for travel to East Africa. Consult with your healthcare provider to tailor this information to your personal health needs.

Recommended Vaccinations

  1. Hepatitis A : Transmission can occur through contaminated food and water. Vaccination is advised, especially if you plan to eat uncooked foods or drink untreated water.
  2. Hepatitis B : Important if you may be exposed to blood or body fluids, or if you will have close contact with the local population. This vaccine is also recommended for all infants and children who missed it earlier.
  3. Malaria Prevention: Malaria is prevalent across East Africa. Consult your healthcare provider for an appropriate antimalarial prescription. Options include atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine, or primaquine in specific cases.
  4. Meningococcal Disease: If traveling to areas with known outbreaks from December to June, vaccination against meningitis is recommended.
  5. Rabies: Consider pre-exposure vaccination if you will have extensive outdoor exposure in rural areas or engage in activities such as camping or hiking.
  6. Typhoid Fever: This can be contracted through contaminated food or water. The vaccine is advised if you plan to eat street food or drink untreated water.
  7. Yellow Fever: Required for entry into Tanzania if coming from regions with yellow fever. The vaccine should be administered at least 10 days before travel and every 10 years if there is ongoing risk.
  8. Tetanus-Diphtheria and Measles: Ensure you are up-to-date on these vaccinations. A one-time polio vaccine dose for adults may also be necessary.

Malaria Precautions

Malaria is a serious illness transmitted by mosquitoes. All travelers to East Africa should take preventive measures. Consult your healthcare provider for an antimalarial drug prescription and use mosquito protection strategies.

Yellow Fever Certification:

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry into Tanzania if traveling from countries where yellow fever is present.

Food and Water Safety:

Prevent food and waterborne diseases by ensuring your food and drinking water are safe. Traveler’s diarrhea and other illnesses can result from consuming contaminated food or water. Be cautious with food and beverages handled by others, and consider vaccination where applicable.

COVID-19 Guidelines:

As of September 15, 2022, travelers arriving by air in Tanzania are exempt from vaccination and testing requirements. However, those entering through land borders must adhere to different rules:

Fully Vaccinated Travelers :

Must present a valid vaccination certificate and are exempt from additional COVID-19 tests.

Unvaccinated or Partially Vaccinated Travelers

Must provide a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure and may need to take a Rapid Antigen Test upon arrival.

Please ensure compliance with all entry regulations to avoid any travel disruptions.

Ebola Risk

There is currently no risk of Ebola in Tanzania. Historical outbreaks occurred in West Africa and do not pose a threat in Tanzania. Ebola transmission requires direct contact with an infected person’s body fluids, and tourists are not considered at risk.
