The Rongai Route is one of the most distinctive trails to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching from the northern slope of the mountain. Known for its quiet paths, scenic landscapes, and gradual ascent, it is perfect for trekkers seeking a more serene and intimate adventure. Arrival at Kilimanjaro / Transfer to Hotel

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where our Kiliclimb Africa Safaris team will welcome you. Transfer to Maridadi Hotel in Moshi or Tulia Hotel in Arusha (or similar accommodations) for a comfortable overnight stay.

  • Highlights: Hot showers, cozy rooms, internet access, and a briefing with our expedition managers to prepare for the climb.
  • Optional: Extend your hotel stay for extra relaxation or to adjust your travel schedule (additional fees apply).

Nalemuru Gate → Simba Camp

After a morning briefing, travel to Nalemuru Gate, the northern entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. Begin trekking through dense northern forests to reach Simba Camp, where our mountain crew will have tents ready and prepare dinner. Take time to hydrate and rest, as this is your first exposure to altitude.

Simba Camp → Second Cave Camp (Acclimatization Hike)

Depart early to trek to Second Cave Camp. After lunch, take an acclimatization hike towards Kikilewa Camp (3,630 m), gaining a small amount of elevation before returning to camp. This helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness and prepares your body for higher altitudes.

Second Cave Camp → Kikilewa Camp

Trek through drier northern slopes toward Kikilewa Camp, with stunning views of Kibo Volcano (weather permitting). This is a relief day, allowing time to rest and recharge for the next stage. Evening health checks ensure everyone is prepared for higher altitude trekking.

Kikilewa Camp → Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Early morning, trek to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, situated at the foot of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro’s second summit. After lunch, take a short acclimatization hike up Mawenzi Volcano (4,510 m) before returning to camp. Dinner and rest prepare you for the next stage toward the summit.

Highlights: Alpine desert terrain, Mawenzi summit views, acclimatization hike

Mawenzi Tarn Camp → Kibo Camp

Trek toward Kibo Summit Camp, passing the dramatic semi-desert landscape. The terrain becomes rocky, and trekking slowly is advised to conserve energy for the summit attempt that night. Rest at Kibo and hydrate well to prepare for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

RONGAI TREKS
Kibo Camp → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

Depart midnight to 2 am to summit Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. Follow your expert guides up the scree and glacier, reaching Stella Point for sunrise before the final ascent. Descend carefully via Kibo Camp to Horombo Hut. Safety is emphasized, as most accidents occur during descent.
