Overview of the Machame Route - 7 Days

The Machame Route, also known as the Whiskey Route, is one of Kilimanjaro’s most iconic trails, offering a perfect combination of adventure, scenic diversity, and a high summit success rate. At Kiliclimb Africa Safaris, we organize group climbs along this route, allowing travelers to enjoy the experience with like-minded adventurers, whether solo, as a couple, or in a small group.

The Machame Route is available in 6- or 7-day itineraries, with the longer option providing better acclimatization and higher chances of reaching Uhuru Peak. The route takes you through all five climatic zones of Kilimanjaro, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, and offers remarkable landmarks like the Barranco Wall and unique Dendrosenecio kilimanjari plants, found nowhere else on Earth

Day 1

Arrival – Kilimanjaro International Airport → Hotel

Upon arrival at JRO Airport, you will be met by a Kiliclimb Africa Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel. Pre-trek accommodations include Maridadi Hotel in Moshi or Tulia Hotel in Arusha (or similar), offering comfortable rooms, hot water, Wi-Fi, and excellent service. In the evening, attend a briefing with your guide and expedition team to review the upcoming climb and prepare for departure.

Machame camp
Machame Gate → Machame Camp

After a morning briefing, your group will drive to Machame Gate, complete registration, and begin trekking through the lush rainforest. Expect muddy trails and occasional tropical showers. This day sets the pace for your climb and starts your acclimatization to higher altitudes.

Tips for Success:

  • Drink 4+ liters of water throughout the day.
  • Consider preventive measures for altitude sickness, as advised by your guide.

Machame Camp → Shira Camp (Acclimatization Hike to Lava Tower)

After breakfast, trek out of the rainforest and ascend toward Shira Camp, enjoying the stunning views of the Shira Plateau. Later, embark on a short acclimatization hike to Lava Tower before returning to Shira Camp for dinner and rest.

Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Begin the ascent to Lava Tower, reaching 4,600m for critical acclimatization. Then descend to Barranco Camp, located at the base of the dramatic Barranco Wall. This day prepares climbers physically and mentally for the iconic climb ahead.

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (Acclimatization Hike)

Start early to tackle the Barranco Wall, a moderately challenging climb with excellent photo opportunities. Continue to Karanga Camp, with an acclimatization hike towards Barafu Camp before returning to Karanga for the night.

Highlights: Barranco Wall climb, alpine desert scenery, summit views of Kibo Peak

Acclimatization hike:

3,900m → 4,050m (highest point 4,270m)

Machame Barafu camp
Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp → Acclimatization Hike

Trek to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. Settle into tents and sleeping arrangements prepared by the Kiliclimb team. Later, embark on an acclimatization hike to Kosovo Summit Camp, then return to Barafu Camp for dinner and rest.

uhuuru peak
Summit Day – Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Millennium Camp

Depart around midnight, ascending the final slopes to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After taking in the breathtaking views and glaciers, descend to Barafu Camp for lunch and continue to Millennium Camp for overnight rest.

Highlights: Summit Uhuru Peak, witness glaciers, group summit photos, emotional achievement

Departure

After breakfast and check-out, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward journey.
