Moshi → Shira Gate{Londorosi Gate on The Western Kilimanjaro} → Shira 2 Camp

The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Moshi/Arusha to Shira Gate. From here, your group climbs through lush montane forest, following a winding trail that gradually ascends the mountain’s ridge. Expect muddy paths and slippery stretches; trekking poles and gaiters are recommended. You’ll camp at Shira 2, enjoying the serenity of this high-altitude plateau and spectacular views of the surrounding peaks.

Shira 2 Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Climb eastward along the Shira Plateau, approaching the iconic Lava Tower, often called the “Shark’s Tooth.” This day is vital for acclimatization, helping your body adjust to higher altitudes. After exploring the volcanic ridge, descend to Barranco Camp, nestled at the base of the famous Barranco Wall.

Kilimanjaro Shira Route
Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Begin the day with the challenge of Barranco Wall, a steep ridge requiring careful steps and teamwork. Once over the wall, descend slightly into Karanga Valley and continue to Karanga Camp, where the trail intersects with the Mweka Route. This shorter day prepares your body for the final ascent stages.

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Climb steadily to Barafu Camp, the final staging point before summit day. The South Circuit route here offers views of Kibo Peak from multiple angles, with stark desert-like terrain contrasting with distant glaciated peaks. Rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare mentally and physically for the summit attempt.

Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Set off midnight to 2 am for the summit. Ascend the steep scree of Kibo’s southern slopes, passing Stella Point for sunrise views before reaching Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. Celebrate your achievement atop the continent, then descend via Barafu to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Highlights: Sunrise from Stella Point, reaching Uhuru Peak, emotional summit achievement, and rewarding descent through alpine terrain.

Acclimatization hike:

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi/Arusha

Complete your descent through lush forests to Mweka Gate, where your summit certificates await. A vehicle will transfer your group back to Moshi/Arusha. After the trek, enjoy well-earned comfort and relaxation at Maridadi Hotel or Tulia Hotel in Arusha (or similar accommodations) for a refreshing shower, dinner, and celebration of your summit success.
